Feeling the ‘vibes’, 90’s playlists and getting practical
This weekend, Lisa and I went to the Medicine. If you’ve not heard of it, it’s a super-chilled event in Reading, in the UK that has a very relaxed, community style vibe.
There is so much to do, see and experience, but our most favourite thing to do, is find a quiet corner, lay back, listen to music and feel it all. From Hapé circles to Cacao ceremonies, to yoga nidra, kirtan, dance, and brilliant lectures and conversation from leading and emerging voices. (There are also lots of nekkid humans and very relaxed people having gorgeous experiences - it’s all thoroughly lovely.)
The people-watching is amazing and the conversations are often deep, sometimes hilarious, but all really nourishing as folks gather from all over the world, medicine people from the indigenous Yawanawa people, tribe people from central Africa, to European, British, American, in fact, all the corners of the globe are represented as we all learn and receive from each other. You get the idea, right? It was good, really good!
And as every good weekend should, it started with an epic playlist for the roadtrip there. I cannot take the credit for this one, but these were the tunes of Lisa and I’s ‘yoof’ and so we had it full blast and were singing loudly the whole way there. Practical…
I like practical things; in fact, I like most, if not all of the things I do in life, to be useful. Aesthetics aren’t always my first thought, practicality however is. Lisa is the other way round – you can imagine the fun conversations that can create. So, in preparation for the festival, in a fit of practicability, I stuck a solar panel on our truck and a portable fridge in the back.
The aesthetics? They’re not brilliant, but thankfully, Lisa has over-looked it, as she had cold snacks for the entire weekend. And…the battery pack remained charged all day, all night, all weekend, and is currently still going strong even though its cloudy now.
I’m very impressed with my practical solar powered fridge. I’m sure you are too, right?
Not a chicken
In the interest of keeping cool, (I mean in temperature terms, Lisa will testify that she is the cool one in our relationship) I kept trying to make sure I was out of the sun, so I’d adjust my hat, or wrap myself in a shemag to keep the sun off, except no matter what I did, I could not cool down. I was getting more and more wound up, I was shuffling, wiggling, and squinting at the sun. All to no avail. I’d got through a big bottle of water and could not work out what was going on.
Medicine festival has these big, coloured spot lamps that illuminate the trees in fun colours. I spent an hour trying to work out why I was so hot. I was hot because one of these lamps was pointed straight at me and cooking me like a rotisserie chicken. This made Lisa laugh, and more than one person around me laugh too.
Don’t be like me, don’t be a rotisserie chicken.
Practical Spiritual
Back to my love of all things practical, I believe it applies to everything, even, I believe although some might think it controversial, to spirituality. That’s to say, I like to lin the spiritual with practical outcomes, and the practical with spiritual outcomes. Like forest bathing or Meditation. Not quite as uber practical as a solar powered fridge… but…
One of the things that I’ve found super useful in my own spiritual practice is guided meditation. Now,it’s called lots of things: Hypnosis, Yoga Nidra, Hypnogogic states, guided imagery. The techniques differ, but they have all have similar outcomes. Some more potent than others. I personally work with amethod that I’ve created called ‘Under the Cloak’. This is a deep, mediative practice that is a nod, first and foremost to my Norse roots - ancient law makers would go ‘under the cloak’ in order to get guidance from the gods when making big decisions and seeking guidance as to what is right direction, and so this too is my own practice and an invitation I’d like to offer you.
